Husker senior defender Jenny Benson was named the Big 12 Defender of the Week after helping the third-ranked Nebraska soccer team shutout Baylor and Creighton over the weekend, the league office announced Monday.
Benson fired the game-winning goal in a 3-0 win at Baylor on Friday as the Huskers won their conference opener. Nebraska (10-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big 12) limited its last two opponents to a total of seven shots-on-goal, upping its scoreless streak to 420:22.. NU topped Creighton, 2-0, on Sunday.
An All-Big 12 midfielder last season, Benson made the switch to defender this year and has helped a stellar Husker defense post eight shutouts in 10 games this season. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native has also contributed offensively with three goals and two assists.
Texas A&M junior forward Anne Tamporello was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals in two conference wins, while Texas freshman midfielder Kati McBain earned newcomer-of-the-week honors with four points in two conference wins.
The Huskers, who remained ranked third in the NSCAA poll released on Monday, will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Columbia, Mo., for a 4 p.m. game with Missouri.
