Lincoln - Sophomore middle blocker Amber Holmquist pounded a match-high 12 kills on .625 hitting to lead the sixth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team to its second sweep of the US Bank Tournament, a 15-4, 15-2, 15-4 victory over Georgia at the NU Coliseum.
Nebraska is now 2-0, claiming its first victory with a sweep of Northwestern Friday night in US Bank Tournament action. The Bulldogs, which lost to No. 13 Colorado State in three games Friday night, fall to 0-2. Tournament play concludes tonight with Georgia and Northwestern facing off a 5 p.m., and CSU and the Huskers battling at 7 p.m.
Holmquist wasn't the only offensive star as NU continued its weekend dominance at the net, posting a hitting percentage of .433 -- its best mark since Oct. 3, 1998 (at Oklahoma). Junior middle blocker Jenny Kropp produced seven kills on nine attempts for a career-best .778 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Anna Schrad notched five kills on .500 hitting. Overall, six Huskers finished with four kills or more hit over .300. Sophomore setter Greichaly Cepero, who recorded 30 assists, five kills and three block assists.
Georgia, which hit just .121 for the match, was led by Luresa Forsythe, who recorded 11 kills.
Leading 3-2 in the first game, Nebraska took control on a Kropp kill, then went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-3 lead. Kropp served an ace for NU's 14th point of the match, and freshman outside hitter Anna Schrad sealed the 15-4, first-game win with the first kill of her collegiate career. Holmquist notched four kills on four attacks to lead the Huskers to a .553 hitting percentage in the first game.
The Huskers had few problems in the second game, taking an early 6-2 lead, before reeling off nine straight points for the 15-2 win. NU hit .438 in the second game behind five kills from Holmquist.
Nebraska carried its momentum into the third, building a 6-3 lead before Angie Oxley served four unanswered points for a 10-3 lead. Georgia took control on an Oxley serving error, but NU regained possession on the next play when Holmquist and Cepero blocked the Bulldogs Kilee Goetz. The Huskers scored five straight to end the third game, with Oxley serving for the match.
In the other 10 a.m. match, No. 13 Colorado State (4-0) defeated Northwestern (0-2) 15-6, 15-10, 15-3. Angela Knopf led the Rams with 13 kills on .813 hitting, while Krista Swartzendruber added 10. Erika Lange led Northwestern with nine kills and a .353 hitting percentage.
