Freshmen Harms, Haxton lead Huskers to win over Drury

Lincoln -- Freshman Christy Harms scored three goals and freshman Kelly Haxton added two more, as the Nebraska soccer team trounced Drury, 11-0, Sunday evening at the Abbott Sports Complex. The fifth-ranked Huskers, who improved to 4-0-0, have yet to allow a goal this season, outscoring their opponents 31-0. Drury, which fell to 0-4-0, was outshot 44-6 and outcornered 13-1.

Harms, starting in place of preseason All-American Christine Latham, scored her first goal at 10:37, and added back-to-back scoring shots in the second half (45:40 and 56:29). The Blue Springs, Mo., native, is now tied with Latham for the team lead with four goals on the season. Latham was forced to sit out after receiving a red card against Southwest Missouri State.

"Christy gave us a nice contribution up front," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said. "Her combination of explosiveness, power and tenacity really helped us out."

Also scoring for the Huskers were junior forward Becky Preston (7:05), junior forward Najah Williams (17:33), senior forward Lauren Tatum (20:00), junior forward Danica Carey (39:50), sophomore forward Brooke Jones (60:46), and Haxton at 61:50 and 72:51.

NU sophomore goalkeeper Leah Lamale recorded her first four saves of the season, playing the final 59:53 behind starting senior Karina LeBlanc. Though she was not shot on, LeBlanc extended her scoreless streak to 315:07.

The Huskers played without senior Jenny Benson, who sat out with an injured quadriceps. Benson, however, is expected to play when NU takes the field again on Friday, in a 7 p.m. contest against 10th-ranked Florida at the Abbott Sports Complex.

"It's going to get tougher from here on," Walker said.
