Two Huskers Earn All-Big 12 Honors

Lincoln- Two University of Nebraska women's tennis players were selected to the All-Big 12 team announced Friday by the conference office. Seniors Sandra Noetzel (Hannover, Germany) and Gina Pelazini (Rialto, Calif.) were selected in a vote by the league coaches.

Noetzel, a three-time All-Big 12 selection, was honored in both singles and doubles, while the honor is the first for Pelazini, who teamed with Noetzel at the No. 1 doubles this past season. The two honorees are the most NU has had in the four seasons of Big 12 Conference play.

Noetzel, who earned All-Big 12 honors in 1997 and 1999, ended her career at Nebraska as the winningest player in team history, finishing with a 104-39 record, including a 19-3 mark this spring. The first Husker singles players to qualify for the NCAA Championships last season, Noetzel finished the season ranked 88th nationally and was the Big 12 runner-up at No. 1 singles this season.

The duo of Noetzel and Pelazini earned All-Big 12 honors at No. 1 doubles after finishing the season with a 14-7 record, including 6-6 in the Big 12. The duo was ranked as high as No. 23 nationally during the spring before falling out of the national rankings. They are the first Husker doubles team to earn All-Big 12 honors.

Nebraska ends its season with a 19-6 record, the best in school history, and a No. 58 national ranking, which was also the best in school history. In addition to the two All-Big 12 selections, sophomore Amy Frisch (Crescent Springs, Ky.) won the Big 12 No. 6 singles championship, while the team of freshman Maria Fernandez (Puebla, Mexico) and sophomore Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) won the conference title at No. 2 doubles.
