Minneapolis - University of Nebraska pitcher Shane Komine (Honolulu, Hawaii), the Big 12 Player of the Year, will undergo surgery Saturday afternoon at University Hospital in Minneapolis.
Komine suffered a broken jaw in three places after getting hit by a line drive off the bat of Butler catcher Eddie Olszta in the eighth inning of Nebraska's 2-1 opening round win over Butler Friday. Komine, who is 11-3 with a 2.14 earned-run average, earned first-team All-America honors by USA Today/Baseball Weekly and Collegiate Baseball this season.
According to Nebraska trainer Aaron Wells, Komine will undergo surgery on Saturday and will be hospitalized until Sunday, when he will fly back to Lincoln. Wells says that Komine's status is questionable for the rest of the season. The sophomore holds NU's single-season record with 154 strikeouts after recording 12 K's in Friday's win.
