Fresno States Shuts Down Husker Offense

Lincoln -- Fresno State's Tom Graham pitched a three-hit complete game and held the Huskers to a season low one total run, as No. 21 Fresno State defeated the 10th-ranked Huskers, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Buck Beltzer Stadium.

FSU (39-16) handed the Huskers (41-14) just their third loss in 25 games, and just their fourth of the year at Buck Beltzer Stadium as Nebraska had its fewest hits in 28 games. Freshman Jamie Rodrigue was charged with the loss after allowing four hits and two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Rodrigue (8-3) struck out three and didn't give up a walk in the contest.

Nebraska scored its only run in the third inning when Aaron Gozart hit into a run-scoring double play, plating Adam Shabala who led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Josh Hesse followed Shabala's double with a bunt single, before being forced out on the double play.

The only other Husker baserunner in the game came in the fourth, a leadoff double from Adam Stern. Graham retired the first six batters he faced and finished the game by retiring the final 18 batters of the game.

Rodrigue held Fresno State scoreless through the first three innings. Nick Garcia's one-run double in the fourth put the Bulldogs on the board and snapped a string of 27 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings for Rodrigue.

The Bulldogs used a sacrifice fly from Tom Creighton in the fifth to take the lead, scoring Oscar Lopez, who led off the inning with a triple to left centerfield.

Husker reliever Steve Hale struck out the final batter of the fifth, but gave up a three-run home to Mike Bowlin in the sixth, giving FSU a 5-1 lead. Bowling hit another homer in the eighth off Brandon Penas to give FSU its final run.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
