Lincoln -- Nebraska's eight-game win streak, the longest current streak in Division I, has landed the Huskers in two of the nation's top 25 polls as of Monday afternoon. The third poll, Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll is due out Monday evening.
The Huskers (26-11, 13-8) are rated 19th in Baseball America's top-25 poll, making their first appearance in the publication's poll since the final poll last season. Nebraska reappeared in Collegiate Baseball News at No. 25 after earning a No. 30 ranking back on March 27.
Nebraska brings an eight-game winning streak home for an 11-game home stand beginning with Western Illinois, Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Huskers and Leathernecks will also play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Huskers, who have swept their past two Big 12 opponents, will face defending Big 12 champion Texas A&M in a three-game series this weekend. The two teams will play Friday at 6:30 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Nebraska is currently tied for third in the conference. Texas A&M comes into Lincoln with a 21-24 overall record and a 10-11 mark in conference play after advancing to the College World Series last season.
Dan Johnson Named Big 12 Player of the Week
Lincoln -- Junior first baseman Dan Johnson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) has been named the Big 12 player of the week after leading the Huskers to a 4-0 week with a win over No. 21 Creighton and a series sweep over Missouri.
Johnson went 7-for-10 (.700) against the Tigers, hitting one double and two home runs. Johnson, who leads the conference in home runs in league games with nine, hit -a solo home run in the fourth inning of game two to tie the game at 3-3. His other round tripper was a two-run shot in the top of the first inning in the third game of the series. In the first game of the series he went 3-for-3 with three base hits and scored a run.
Johnson, a transfer from Iowa Western Community College, has led the Huskers to a 14-4 record since taking over as the starting first baseman. He is hitting .379 for the year, including .440 in conference games. Johnson also ranks second in the Big 12 in runs batted in and fifth in total bases.
