Lincoln -- The No. 65 Nebraska men's tennis team won its second consecutive home match by defeating Drake University, 6-1, at the Woods Tennis Center Wednesday. The Huskers improved to 6-3 while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-4.
After No. 1 singles, Jorge Abos Sanchez lost the first game of the day against Drake's Stephen Killian, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, NU never looked back. The Huskers swept the next five singles matches with victories from No. 2 Kai Rieke, No. 3 Adnan Hadziaalic, No. 4 Fungai Tongoona, No. 5 Andrew Wiese, and No. 6 Ryan Haith. All players but Tongoona recorded straight set victories.
Nebraska started the doubles matches with a win from No. 1 doubles team, Rieke/Haith. Drake's No. 2 duo Aaron Endress-Fox/Tim Miller fought back beating Wiese/Hadzialic, 8-6. But Nebraska was able to capture the doubles point with a win from No. 3 doubles team, Abos Sanchez/Hamdan over Kirk Schuler/ Bryan Andress-Fox, 8-2.
"This was a very tough, competitive match for us,? Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. ?It seemed like we wanted it more and we were able to capitalize on the big points."
"This win should give us momentum going into the match against Colorado. We beat them last year but we both have new players this year," said McDermott. "It will be a tough match, but hopefully we can get back on the winning side in conference."
The Huskers are 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference, and will look to add their first win against Colorado this Sunday, March 5. The match is in Boulder, Colo. at 11 a.m. MST.
