Lincoln -- Nebraska Football Coach Frank Solich announced that Brian Washington has been named as a graduate assistant for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska loses both of its two graduate assistants this season as Jon Bostick and Chad Stanley will each complete their third and final year. Washington replaces Stanley, while a search for a replacement for Bostick has begun. While Stanley worked with the offense, Washington will assist the defensive coaches.
Brian Washington was a standout defensive back for the Huskers from 1984-85-86-87. He had a long and successful pro career as a strong safety, playing for the Cleveland Browns in 1988-89 (10th round draft selection), then five years for the New York Jets (1990-94) and finishing with the Kansas City Chiefs (1995-96). In 1992, Washington was all-pro and was named the Jets' most valuable player.
As a Husker, Washington was a four-year starter at strong stafety. He totaled 94 tackles (51 solo) with five tackles for 13 yards lost, five interceptions, 12 pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He also had interceptions in each of his last two Bowl games (1987 Sugar Bowl, Nebraska def. Louisiana State, 30-15, and 1988 Fiesta Bowl, NU lost to Florida State, 31-28).
Originally from Highland Springs, Va. (Highland Springs HS), Washington earned his bachelor's degree from UNL in human resources and family science with an emphasis on financial management in 1998. He was born on Sept. 10, 1965.
