Colorado Springs, Colo. -- Nebraska's two-time All-American rightside hitter Nancy Meendering is one of four collegiate standouts that have been added to the USA Women's National Volleyball Training Team. Meendering and the players were selected after training with the current team last week. Meendering, a two-time AVCA First-Team All-American, along with Co-National Player of the Year Kerri Walsh (Stanford), Logan Tom (Stanford) and Heather Bown (Hawaii), will join the squad when the team returns to full-time training on Jan. 31
Meendering was named the Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the Huskers to their second straight Big 12 title in 1999. She posted 528 kills, 283 digs, 140 blocks and 27 aces. She will postpone her senior year of eligibility if selected to the final 11-player national team roster. With the addition of the four collegiate players, there are currently 18 players training for the 2000 Olympic Games, with another two players eligible to return in March. The team will resume international competition in April. The Olympics will run from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1.
The USA Women's National Team claimed the NIKE Americas' Volleyball Challenge earlier this month to earn the NORCECA (North America/Central America/Caribbean) Zone's automatic bid into the Olympic Games.
