1999 Senior Football Awards Announced

Lincoln -- The University of Nebraska announced the three winners of the annual senior football awards Monday. The winners of the Novak Trophy, Chamberlin Trophy and Native Son Award will be honored at the Outland Trophy banquet on Jan. 12, 2000, in Omaha.

The Tom Novak Trophy is awarded annually to the Husker senior who "best exemplifies courage and determination despite all odds in the manner of Nebraska All-American center Tom Novak." The 1999 Novak Trophy winner is co-captain offensive tackle Adam Julch. The 6-5, 320-pound offensive tackle from Omaha Burke, anchored the Husker offensive line in 1999, helping Nebraska finish fourth in the nation in rushing offense. Despite battling injuries, he started all 12 games this season for the Huskers, finishing the year with 70 pancake blocks, an average of 5.8 per game. Through his career, Julch has endured numerous injuries, yet still managed to start a total of 23 games. As a key reserve in 1997, Julch helped the Nebraska offense lead the nation in rushing, scoring and total offense en route to winning a third National Championship in four years.

The Guy Chamberlin Trophy is presented to the senior who has shown by his play and contributions to the betterment of the University of Nebraska football squad that he has the qualities and dedication of Guy Chamberlin. The winner of the 1999 Chamberlin trophy is co-captain rover Mike Brown. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native led all Huskers with 96 total tackles, five interceptions and six fumbles caused. Brown has led the Huskers in tackles for the past three seasons. He also earned first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press, Football Writers Association and CBS SportsLine. Brown was also a candidate for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Mike Fox Bronco Nagurski Trophy in 1999.

The 1999 Native Son Award winner is All-American linebacker Brian Shaw. The Native Son Award is voted on by the Husker coaching staff, and is awarded to the senior who best exemplifies the following qualities: good work ethic, competitiveness, leadership, forthrightness, sense of humor, pride, loyalty, and love of Nebraska. The award is named for former Husker assistant coach Cletus Fischer. Shaw finished his Husker career as a four-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 linebacker and was recently named the 1999 Burger King Divison I Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Shaw also had 23 tackles this season, including two for a loss and two blocked punts.
