Nebraska women take 2nd, men 7that Wolverine Interregional

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The Nebraska women's cross country team accumulated 89 points on their way to a second-place finish at the Wolverine Interregional Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 17, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The finish marks the second time this season the Huskers have captured the runner-up title. Washington took the team title with 42 points.

The Huskers were paced by senior Michelle Brooks, a Preston, England, native, who finished ninth in 17:58. Close on her heels was fellow senior Jaime Pauli (Milbank, S.D.), who finished 10th in 18:04. Sophomore Jeannette Zimmer (Port Orchard, Wash.) took 15th-place, crossing the line in a time of 18:16. Freshman Kathryn Handrup (Aurora, Neb.) was the fourth Husker to finish, 25th overall, covering the 5,000-meter course in 18:29. Mirjana Glisovic, a freshman from Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslovia, finished 30th in 18:39, followed by junior Jaimie Kruger (Kearney, Neb.), who took 33rd in 18:42. Rounding out the scoring for Nebraska was senior Melinda Oliver, a Carroll, Neb. native, who placed 38th in a time of 18:46. Heather Hanscom of James Madison claimed the meet title in 17:30.

On the men's side, Nebraska finished seventh (169 points) on the strength of junior Marcus Witter's sixth-place finish. The Kearney, Neb., native covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:11. Freshman Mike Kamm (Bellevue, Wash.) finished 30th in 25:51 followed by junior Aaron Carrizales (Morrill, Neb.), who took 31st in a time of 25:53. Four freshman rounded out the scoring for the Huskers including, Jed Barta (Idaho Falls, N.D.), who finished 49th (26:21), Ian Gray (Eugene, Ore.), who took 55th in 26:26, James DeBruhl (Ontario, Calif.), who took 68th (26:57) and Phillip Davis (Watertown, S.D.), who finished 79th in a time of 27:34. Michigan's Jay Cantin captured the individual title with a time of 24:43. Michigan also took the team title with 34 points.

Nebraska will use the next two weeks to prepare for the Big 12 Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30, in College Station, Texas. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. followed by the women's race at 11 a.m.
