Lawrence, Kan.--Kansas defeated Nebraska, 1-0, in the first of two games Saturday at Jayhawk Field, but with the help of junior Jennifer Lizama, who hit two home runs in game two, the Huskers earned a split with a 6-3 win in the second contest. Nebraska is now 27-16 overall and 9-6 in the Big 12 Conference.
The Jayhawks (26-25, 7-7) earned a 1-0 win in a pitcher-dominated game one. Leah Tabb's double to center allowed Shelly Musser to score from second base in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Jayhawks all the breathing room they would need. Musser had reached base on an error by Husker Cindy Roethemeyer before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Wright.
Nebraska threatened two outs into the third inning when Lizama reached base on an error by Wright and advanced to third following a Jamie Fuente single, but Husker Heather Martin flied out to third to end the rally.
KU's Sarah Workman (16-11) picked up the win on the mound, pitching a three-hitter and recording nine stikeouts in the complete-game outing. Nebraska's Jenny Voss, who allowed just two hits and recorded three strikeouts in six innings of action, dropped to 17-7 for the season.
In game two, Lizama's 3-for-4 performance included her 11th and 12th home runs of the season, a single and three RBI. The second-team All-American from San Lorenzo, Calif., led off the second game with a single to right field. Designated hitter Ginger Taylor then reached on a fielder's choice. Following a Fuente ground out, Taylor scored on a Leigh Suhr single to left field, giving NU an early 1-0 edge.
The Huskers added two more runs in the second on a Kelly Pinkepank single and the first of Lizama's two home runs.
With two outs in the fourth, Lizama struck again with a solo home run to extend the Husker lead to 4-0.
Kansas managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth stanza, putting up two runs to cut the Nebraska advantage to 4-2. Voss, who completed each game of the double header for Nebraska, walked Shannon Stanwix to begin the fourth. Megan Urquhart struck out swinging before Stanwix advanced to second on a Voss wild pitch. Voss then walked Katie Malone, followed by a Heather Sims RBI single. Christi Musser smacked an RBI single to center to round out the fourth-inning scoring run.
NU immediately answered with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth inning. Two walks given up to Fuente and Jenifer Williams by KU pitcher Workman put the Huskers in business. Jill Baker pinch ran for Fuente and advanced to second on an error by Sims. Baker and Williams then executed the double steal to perfection, putting two runners in scoring position with just one out. Baker scored on a Martin ground out and Williams reached home on a Roethemeyer single to give Nebraska a 6-2 lead.
The Jayhawks added one more run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Tabb, but NU's Voss shut down Kansas' hopes for a comeback by striking out Stanwix and forcing Urquhart intoa ground out.
Voss improved to 18-7, striking out four and giving up nine hits in the seven-inning outing. For the Jayhawks, Melanie DeWinter (4-6) picked up the loss in just two and a third innings pitched.
Nebraska will play its final doubleheader of the regular season on Sunday against Missouri in Columbia, Mo., at noon and 2 p.m.
