Huskers Slug Way to Win and Season Sweep Over Jays

Lincoln - After three consecutive one-run wins over the Creighton Bluejays in 1999, the Nebraska softball team was looking for a little breathing room on Wednesday night at Dill Field in Omaha. The Huskers got that and more as they cruised to an 8-1 win and a perfect 5-0 mark on the season against the Jays. Nebraska belted 10 hits, including three extra-base hits, while All-American Jenny Voss held the Jays to just four hits and no earned runs. The win moved Nebraska to 26-15 on the year with five regular-season games remaining.

Neither team got on the board until the third inning when Lizama hit a two-out fly down the right field line that ricocheted off the tip of the outstretched glove of a hussling Emily Townsend. Before Creighton could get the ball home, Lizama had circled the bases for her 10th home run of the year. After singles by Jamie Fuenet and Heather Martin, the hot-hitting Jenifer Williams smashed a double to score Fuente to put Nebraska up 2-1. Creighton would come back with a lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Temple Windhorst hit a double to score Townsend from first. After a pitching change in the fifth, Lizama led off the inning with a single to center and quickly advanced to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. Heather Martin then drew a walk and Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases for freshman Leigh Suhr. Suhr hit a long fly that CU left fielder Francesca Nix mishandled allowing a pair of Huskers to score and making it 4-1. Nebraska slammed the door on Creighton in the sixth. Kelly Pinkepank, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on two wild pitches, scored the first run of the inning when Lizama singled to center. A few batters later, Williams collected an infield single to score Lizama. With two batters on Suhr came up again and this time smashed her first career triple to bring in two more Huskers and make it 8-1. Voss sat CU down in order in the sixth and seventh to improve to 17-6 on the year.

Lizama went 3-for-3 in the game with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Williams went 2-for-3 for the second consecutive game with a double and two runs batted in. In the game, the Huskers were hit by four Creighton pitches. Ellen Middleton was beamed for the eighth time this year tying the single season school record held by Karla Knicely.

Nebraska will be back in action on this weekend when it plays at Kansas on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. and at Missouri on Sunday at noon and 2 p.m.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RHONDA REVELLE:
--"The energy was very good tonight. Because it was very good, we were loose and we were able to score some runs."

--"It's hard to go 5-0 against any team. It's just the law of averages that you're going to lose sometime, so I feel very fortunate to go 5-0 against them. This was the first to not go down to the wire against them all year."

--"I stepped back a little tonight, because I told them I'm right there with you and I care about you, but I need you to lead the way. I was pretty reserved tonight and it wasn't because I was angry with them."
