Cyclones Slug 10 Hits To Knock Off Huskers

Ames, Iowa --- The Nebraska softball team was in second place in the Big 12 Conference for less than 24 hours before falling out of the title hunt with a 6-3 loss to Iowa State at the Southwest Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. A pair of losses by Texas put the Huskers temporarily in second headed into the game, but the loss left Nebraska at 8-5 in the league and 25-15 overall.

Starting pitcher Jenny Voss fell behind early and the Husker offense was never able to dig the Huskers out. Iowa State recorded three straight singles to start off the game and had a 3-0 lead before a single out was on the board. Senior Erin Woods singled in the first run of the game. A play later, ISU caught the Huskers off guard by stealing second allowing a runner on third to score the second run. The final run of the inning came on a throwing error by NU third baseman Cindy Roethemeyer. Nebraska couldn't get any offense going until the third. Junior Jenifer Williams single-handedly put the Huskers on the board by sending a pitch from ISU pitcher Mandy Loushin over the left field fence. The homer was the second of the year and third of Williams' career. Williams came up big an inning later as she ripped a double to score Jessica Draemel from second. But just as soon as Nebraska pulled back in the game, Iowa State added three more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Nebraska was able to punch one run in in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough. Voss dropped to 16-6 on the year with her worst loss of the season. Williams went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak against the Cyclones. The two teams will square off on May 9 for the second game of the series.

Nebraska will be back in action on Wednesday, April 28, in Omaha, Neb., when it takes on the Creighton Bluejays at 7 p.m. at Dill Field.
