Hardabura Wins All Around; Huskers Join Michigan and Ohio State in the Team Finals

Paced by NCAA champion Jason Hardabura's 58.05 in the all-around, the University of Nebraska men's gymnastics team passed Penn State in the final rotation to secure a berth in the NCAA Team Finals Friday night.

Nebraska, which finished with a score of 229.525, will be joined by Michigan, seeking its first NCAA title since 1970, won the preliminary session with a score of 230.50, while Ohio State finished second with a 229.85. The Buckeyes are making their first NCAA Team Finals appearance since winning a national title in 1996.

Hardabura, who set a school record with his fifth score of 58 or better this season, became the first Husker to win the all-around title since Richard Grace won in 1995, the last time Nebraska competed in the NCAA Championships. The sophomore from Oakville, Ontario, is the ninth NCAA all-around champion in the program's history.

''I can't begin to tell you the respect I have for the Nebraska program and for all the other Nebraska all-around champions,'' Hardabura said. ''I hope I can live up to the respect all those other guys have.''

Michigan's Justin Toman was second (57.9) in the all-around and Iowa's Todd Strada was third (57.875).

Nebraska trailed third-place Penn State going into the final event, but the Huskers had a strong team routine on the high bar to supplant the Nittany Lions, who finished with 228.20. Brigham Young (227.15) and Stanford (226.70) also were eliminated.

"We wanted to be in the running and have an opportunity,'' Michigan coach Kurt Golder said. ''We didn't care if we were first, second or third tonight.''
