Wichita, Kan. --- Rain and lightning caused intermittent delays in a softball doubleheader between Nebraska and Wichita State, but not before the two squads fought to a split at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers took game one 2-1 to end Nebraska's five-game losing streak and Nebraska won the nightcap 4-0. The Huskers now sit at 25-14 on the year.
It took both teams a while to get going in game one. After getting in a bases loaded jam in the third inning, NU starting pitcher Leigh Ann Walker got the Huskers out of it by coaxing a WSU ground out to end the inning. Nebraska put the first run on the board in the fourth inning. Jamie Fuente led off with a double to right center. Head Coach Rhonda Revelle pinch ran Jill Baker for Fuente before Ellen Middleton came to the plate. Middleton hit a grounder to the WSU second baseman who misthrew the first baseman allowing Baker to score. The Shockers answered in the bottom half of the inning when Susie Gates doubled in Erin Stephens from first. An inning later, WSU added the eventual game winner when Jillene Black singled in Misti Catledge. Nebraska went hitless in the final two innings to drop its first game to the Shockers in seven games. Walker struck out seven but dropped to 7-6 on the year.
In game two, Jennifer Lizama led off the contest with a line drive solo homer to left field. The homer was the ninth of the season for Lizama and the 27th of her career. Nebraska picked up two more hits in the inning but couldn't bring in another run. The two squads played two full innings before lightning in the area delayed the game for 20 minutes. When play resumed, Nebraska added two quick runs in the top of the third. Lizama scored the first of the two runs when Leigh Suhr hit a fly that was dropped by the WSU right fielder. Suhr made it to third on the play and a few pitches later stole home to make it a 3-0 game. Suhr hit into another error in the top of the fourth, this time scoring Cindy Roethemeyer from second to make it 4-0. Starting pitcher Jenny Voss provided all the defense the Huskers needed, hurling the first one-hitter of the season. She struck out six while walking four to improve to 16-5 on the season and her fifth straight win.
Lizama stole a base in the third inning of the second game to break the school career record for stolen base. The swipe was the 61st of Lizama's career breaking Margie Ogrodowicz' previous mark of 60.
Nebraska will be back in action on Saturday with a single conference game against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, at noon.
