College Station, Texas -- The 22nd-ranked Nebraska baseball team (20-7 overall and 8-2 in the Big 12 Conference) had its 11-game winning streak snapped and slipped out of first place in the Big 12 Conference following a 14-4 loss at No. 8 Texas A&M in front of a crowd of 4,328 fans at C.E. Olsen Field on Friday night.
The high-octane Nebraska offense was held in check by Texas A&M left-hander Casey Fossum on Friday night. The Huskers were held to four runs and managed just five hits against Fossum (6-3) who threw his fourth complete game of the season.
Freshman outfielder John Cole and sophomore third baseman Danny Kimura proved the highlights for the Huskers in their first loss since March 6. Cole belted a solo home run and had an RBI single, while Kimura launched a monster two-run home run in the fourth inning. For the Aggies (26-8 and 9-3), Dell Lindsey belted three home runs to lead the offensive attack.
"I told the team after the game that this was just one game, and to forget about it and come back out and play hard tomorrow," NU Coach Dave Van Horn said. "I give Texas A&M a lot of credit, especially their pitcher. We had a couple of chances to get back in the game, but we didn't get the big hit when we needed it."
Nebraska scrapped back for three runs in the top of the fourth. Kimura hit a two-run home off Fossum to bring NU within 6-2. After Justin Cowan was hit by a pitch and Brian Johnson walked, Cole had an RBI single to score Cowan. With Johnson on third and Cole on second following a stolen base, Erik Mumm struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of fourth, A&M answered back with four runs and knocked Jay Sirianni out of the contest. Daylan Holt, Lindsey each had RBI singles and Erik Sobek hit a two-run homer to put the Aggies in front 10-3.
Lindsey added his second home run of the game in the sixth when he drilled a R.D. Spiehs pitch out to left to put A&M ahead 11-3.
In the Nebraska seventh, Cole hit a leadoff home run to trim the lead to 11-4. But in the eighth, John Scheschuk hit a two-run homer and Lindsey hit his third home of the game to make the score 14-4.
A&M extended its lead to 6-0 in the third when Lindsey launched a home run off Sirianni (4-2). After Erik Sobek was hit by a Sirianni pitch, Shawn Schumacher doubled home Sobek.
In the first inning, Texas A&M jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Steven Truitt led off the inning with a triple to right and scored on a single by Sean Heaney. Holt followed with a single but was forced out at second as Scheschuk reached on a fielder's choice. With Heaney at third and Scheschuk at first, Lindsey hit a ground ball to Kimura at third, but the sophomore bobbled the ball allowing Lindsey to reach first and Heaney to score.
After Erik Sobek grounded out for the second out of the inning, Shawn Schumacher hit a ground ball that NU shortstop Brandt Vlieger bobbled and Scheschuk and Lindsey both scored.
Nebraska and Texas A&M will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. at Olsen Field. Junior left-hander Scott Fries (5-1) and freshman right-hander Shane Komine (5-0) will be on the mound for Nebraska.
