Huskers defeat Oklahoma 6-1, win third-straight match

Lincoln - The Nebraska men's tennis team won its third-straight match Friday, defeating Oklahoma 6-1 at Woods Tennis Center. With the victory, the Huskers assured themselves of their best conference mark since 1994, improving to 3-3 in the Big 12 Conference and 8-10 overall.

NU's Dinko Verzi and Andrew Wiese started the day off well, picking up a 9-8 doubles victory over Charlie Roberson and Rick Warren at No. 1 doubles. The Huskers couldn't follow suit at No. 2 and No. 3 double, however, and lost the doubles point.

But NU rebounded with a dominant singles performance, winning all six matches for the first time sinceits 7-0 win over Lamar Feb. 6. Verzi, Lance Mills and Juan Hamdan were forced to come back from 0-1 deficits before picking up three-set wins. Jorge Abos Sanchez improved his team-best singles mark to 15-3 with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Andrew Wiese and Kai Rieke recorded two-set victories as well.

"I kind of chewed the guys out after doubles," NU Coach Kerry McDermott said. "We were so close, and Dinko and Andrew got us off to a great start. But we came back. It is so difficult to win six singles matches. These guys are fighters. They've fought all year and things are falling into place for us now."

The Huskers return to action Sunday when they play host to Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. at Woods Tennis Center.
