Lincoln - After picking up two victories last week, the Nebraska women's tennis team, ranked No. 65 in the latest ITA rankings, will be looking to extend its seven-match win streak when the Huskers play host to the Colorado State Rams this afternoon. The match will be played at the Woods Tennis Center.
Nebraska Head Coach Scott Jacobson is pleased with the performance of his team so far, but knows that the toughest part of NU's schedule is yet to come.
"The kids are playing hard right now," Jacobson said. "They have done great so far to this point, but we have some serious challenges to come."
Nebraska's 13-3 overall record is tops in the Big 12, and with NU's next win the Huskers would clinch is third consecutive winning season. This would be the first time since the 1981-82-83 seasons that Nebraska will have had three consecutive winning seasons.
Closing in on another record is junior Sandra Noetzel. The Hannover, Germany native currently has 69 career singles wins, six off the all-time school mark of 75 held by Iidiko Guba (1988-91).
Colorado State will enter the match this week with a 7-8 (1-4 WAC) overall record. The Rams will be looking to rebound from a 7-2 loss last week against Utah. Last year, Nebraska defeated Colorado State, 7-2, in Lincoln.
Jacobson knows that this year's matchup with the Rams will be tougher than last year's.
"They are better than a year ago," Jacobson said. "It will be a competitive match for us."
Along with the team winning streak, there are four singles players with win streaks of seven or more. One of the four, freshman Amy Frisch, has won 10 in a row.
"She is one of those kids that is going to do better every time out," Jacobson said. "Amy really loves tennis and it is showing on the court right now."
In doubles, the duo of Noetzel and sophomore Ndali Ijomah are also enjoying a 10 match win streak.
"They have really stepped it up and are doing a good job," Jacobson said. "I think the main thing is that they are really communicating well and it has improved their performance on the court."
