Pine, Kalmikovs and Relay Qualify for Finals on Last Day of NCAA Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - Valery Kalmikovs, Adam Pine and the 400-yard freestyle relay all reached their respective finals as the Nebraska men's swimming and diving team was in action during the morning preliminaries at the 1999 NCAA Championships on Saturday.

Heading into the final session, Nebraska ranks 12th in the team race with 90 points. Third-ranked Auburn leads the competition with 341.5 points, followed by top-ranked Stanford (297) and second-ranked Texas (289.5).

In the preliminaries, Kalmikovs (Riga, Latvia) tied Dmitri Malinovski of BYU for eighth place with a time of 1:58.92. In a swim off contested to advance the winner into the championship finals, Kalmikovs touched the wall first in a NU and Big 12 record time of 1:58.15. Dave Denniston of Auburn was the top qualifier, posting a preliminary time of 1:56.50

Coming off a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly of Friday, Pine (Ballina, Australia) posted the eighth-fastest qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 43.49. Bart Kizierowski of California was the top qualifier, recording a time of 42.60.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay event, Pine joined Anthony Rogis (Weetangera, Australia), Josh Mathias (Mundelein, Ill.) and Javier Botello (Madrid, Spain) as the foursome completed the race in a time of 2:56.01. Auburn posted the top qualifying time with a mark of 2:53.65.

Saturday night finals begin at 6 p.m. CST.
