Huskers Fall to Colorado, 70-53

BOULDER, Colo. -- Chaquita Dilworth had 18 points and five steals as Colorado upset No. 20 Nebraska 70-53 Saturday evening at the Coors Event Center.

Linda Lapp added 13 points and Melody Johnson had 11 off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting for the Buffaloes, who improved to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in the Big 12). Colorado made 12-of-17 free throws in the second half as it gradually increased a 34-27 halftime lead.

Nicole Kubik scored 20 points and Brooke Schwartz added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Huskers, who dipped to 14-5 overall and 3-3 in league play. Nebraska shot just 34 percent (21-of-62) and only 2-of-14 from three-point range. In the second hald, NU converted just 9-of-38 from the floor and missed all seven 3-point attempts.

Kubik, who also had six assists, six rebounds and five steals, kept Nebraska in the game, but picked up her fourth personal foul with eight minutes remaining before fouling out.

Besides Kubik and Schwartz, Nebraska's other three starters combined for just 12 points. Junior center Charlie Rogers had eight points and five boards, but was plagued by foul trouble for much of the first half, picking up all three fouls before intermission.

The Huskers pulled within 11 with 7:39 remaining on a Schwartz basket, but Colorado answered with an 8-2 run to secure the upset.

Behind a hot start by Kubik, the Huskers jumped out to an early eight point lead in the first half. Kubik, who was 6-of-8 from the floor before halftime, had 12 of her 20 points before intermission

In the first meeting, Nebraska forced 29 CU turnovers, but the Buffs turned the tide on Saturday, forcing 26 Husker turnovers while committing only 22.

"I'm disappointed because I think we got outhustled," said NU Coach Paul Sanderford, whose team dropped to 5-5 on the road. "My hat is off to Ceal and Colorado. They were very well prepared."

"You can blame it on everything. We didn't function as a unit. We functioned as individuals."

The Huskers return to action this Wednesday, Jan. 30, as the Huskers travel to Iowa State. Tip-off at the Hilton Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m.
