This weekend features the Big 12's marquee matchup between the No. 3 Huskers and defending Big 12 champions, No. 13 Texas. Sunday's match features Nebraska against No. 16 Texas A&M.
Nebraska enters the weekend with a perfect 16-0 record, including a 6-0 conference mark. The Huskers have dominated the competition this season, posting a 5-0 record against top-25 teams and sweeping 13 straight opponents. NU's 39-game win streak is the longest active streak in Division I.
Senior setter Fiona Nepo is making a run at 1998 National Player of the Year honors, as the quarterback of Nebraska's deadly offense. Nepo has guided the Huskers to the second-best hitting percentage in Division I with a .348 team average. Under Nepo's direction the Huskers are also the second-best blocking team in the country, averaging 4.00 blocks per game. Nepo etched her name among all-time Husker greats two weeks ago when she broke the school's career assist record held by assistant coach Nikki (Stricker) Best.
Senior middle blocker Megan Korver has been the go-to player in the Husker offense. She has been on a torrid pace as of late, leading the nation with her .470 hitting percentage. She became just the 11th player in Division I history to hit 1.000 in a match (10 kills on 10 attacks) against Iowa State. She leads the Big 12 with a .519 average against conference foes.
Sophomore Nancy Meendering has also been solid for the Huskers. She leads the team with 181 kills and 3.93 kills per game. The 6-1 outside hitter is hitting at a .324 clip and Pettit claims she is one of the hardest hitters to ever play for Nebraska.
Huskers sweep Texas Tech
Despite hitting under .300 for just the third time this season, Nebraska used a solid defensive attack to shut down the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 15-4, 15-6, 15-11, on Friday in Lubbock.
Nebraska used 17 total blocks to record its 11th straight 3-game victory against the Red Raiders, improving to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big 12. The Red Raiders suffered just their fourth loss of the season, falling to 12-4 and 2-3 in the Big 12.
The Huskers used a strong serving attack to win game one. Sophomore Angie Oxley (Ogallala, Neb.) served six straight points in the first frame, leading the Huskers to a 7-1 lead. Nebraska hit .407 in game, while Texas Tech had eight hitting errors compared to just seven kills for a negative .063 average.
Upset-minded Tech made a run at ending NU's 34-game win streak in game two by building a 6-2 lead. However, Oxley once again would dominate at the service line, serving a stretch of seven straight points, that put the Huskers back in control, 9-6. The Red Raiders could not recover, allowing Nebraska to run off a total of 13 straight points to win game two, 15-6.
Senior outside hitter Jaime Krondak (Lincoln, Neb.) had a season-best 12 kills on 26 attacks, finishing with a .423 average. She finished with her first double-double of the season, adding 10 digs.
Sophomore Nancy Meendering (Hull, Iowa) paced the Huskers with a match-high 13 kills. She chipped in nine digs and four block assists in the winning effort. Setter Fiona Nepo (Honolulu, Hawaii) added 38 assists, five digs and a season-high seven blocks for Nebraska.
Huskers dump Baylor
Nebraska blockers didn't let up against Baylor on Saturday, turning 15 total blocks to down Baylor, 15-8, 15-8, 15-6 in Waco, Texas. The 22 points scored by Baylor marked the most points the Bears had ever put up against Nebraska, as NU swept Baylor for the ninth time in as many meetings.
The Huskers raced to a 9-1 lead in the first game before senior Megan Korver (Panama, Neb.) left with an ankle injury. She was diagnosed with a minor ankle sprain and did not return. With Korver out of the lineup, Baylor outscored the Huskers 7-5, before Nebraska closed the door with a 15-8 victory.
The Bears would again challenge in game two as Baylor held a 4-3 lead and trailed 10-7 late in the match. After a Nebraska timeout, the Huskers notched two straight points and eventually won game two on back-to-back service aces by Krondak.
Game three was all Nebraska as the Huskers built a 13-3 lead. Baylor committed nine hitting errors and had just eight kills in the final frame as the Huskers coasted to the 15-6 win.
Meendering keyed the offense with her third double-double of the season, tallying 16 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) came off the bench to contribute a career-high eight kills and five blocks.
