Nebraska Qualifies Six for NCAAs; Places Fourth at West Regional
The No. 2 Nebraska men's gymnastics team finished fourth at the West Regional in front of 512 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla. Saturday night.

Top-ranked California won the competition with a score of 231.45, bettering No. 9 Brigham Young's total of 228.85. No. 10 Oklahoma finished third with a 228.45, edging out NU's score of 228.075, as less than a point separated the second and fourth place teams. New Mexico (223.725) and Air Force (214.25) completed the six-team regional field. California, Brigham Young and Oklahoma advance to the NCAA Championships, April 16-18, at Penn State.

Despite not qualifying as a team, Nebraska placed six individuals into the NCAA Championships. No team qualified as many individuals as Nebraska's six. Penn State, which finished fourth at the East Regional, placed five.

Nebraska's qualifiers are led by all-arounders Jason Hardabura (Oakville, Ontario) and Derek Leiter (Lincoln, Neb.), and junior All-American Marshall Nelson (Greeley, Colo.). In the all-around, Hardabura, a freshman, placed fifth with a score of 56.725, including a second-place finish on still rings with a career-best score of 9.85 and a fourth-place showing on high bar (9.725). Leiter, a sophomore, finished in sixth in the all-around with a 56.125, including a third-place showing on vault (9.725) and a career-high score of 9.65 on still rings to place ninth. California's Oleg Kosyak took first on vault (9.75) and parallel bars (9.75) en route to a first-place total of 58.025.

Nelson, a four-time All-American, qualified on four events: floor exercise; pommel horse; vault and parallel bars. The junior from Greeley, Colo., finished third on floor exercise (9.725), pommel horse (9.725), and parallel bars (9.725), and was sixth on vault (9.65). Nelson is No. 1 in the nation on parallel bars and is the defending NCAA champion on parallel bars and horizontal bar. Nelson did not qualify on horizontal bar, counting a fall and finishing with a score of 8.85.

Junior Jim Koziol (Omaha, Neb.) qualified on two events, including still rings, where he tied his career-best mark with a 9.775 to finish fifth. The Millard South graduate will also compete on floor exercise after finishing 11th with a 9.575. Senior captain Bill Mulholland (North Plainfield, N.J.) also will compete on pommel horse and vault at the NCAAs. Mulholland, who qualified in the all-around the past two seasons, finished seventh on pommel horse (9.625) and 14th on vault (9.55). Sophomore Blake Bukacek (Lincoln, Neb.) rounds out the Nebraska qualifiers after placing sixth on parallel bars with a score of 9.625.

The six individuals will compete in the preliminaries on Thursday, April 16, during the team and all-around competition, beginning at 6 p.m. (CST). If they advance through the first round, the individual event finals will take place on April 18 at 6 p.m.
