The Husker men scored above a 230 for the third consecutive meet, but fell to Penn State, 231.15-230.025, to dip to 10-5 on the year. The Nittany Lions' score was their best this season, as sophomore Mike Dutka scored a 58.50, including first-place marks on floor exercise (9.70), pommel horse (9.90), vault (9.80) and parallel bars (9.80).

For the Huskers, senior Bill Mulholland and sophomore Derek Leiter finished second and third in the all-around with scores of 57.375 and 57.30, respectively. Mulholland, who scored a 9.40 or higher in all six events, bettered his previous season best of 57.075 at Minnesota.

A pair of NU athletes claimed individual titles. Junior Marshall Nelson took first on horizontal bar with a 9.80 and tied Dutka with a 9.80 on parallel bars, while Leiter tied Dutka with a 9.75 on floor exercise. Leiter also took third on pommel horse (9.70), vault (9.75), parallel bars (9.75) and horizontal bar (9.70). Junior Jim Koziol also placed second on rings with a 9.60.
