Nebraska Wins Two Against Talented Teams
Lincoln -- The Nebraska women's tennis team started their double-dual Saturday beating Drake University, 4-1, then defeated Eastern Michigan, 5-2, at Woods Tennis Center.
Freshman Rebecca Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) did not participate in any of the duals this weekend due to illness. Despite not having R. Harvey, the Huskers were able to fill in the holes and win.
"I think that our team over all played well," Elissa Kinard said. "We played as team to get these wins."
The Huskers' first dual was with Drake. The Huskers and Bulldogs split the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, after both head coaches established beforehand that they would not play threes sets in order to keep the athletes rested for the long weekend.
Junior Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and freshman Rose Ketmayura (Austin, Texas) lost their first match of the season to Cecily Debusker and Rajasree Kuruvilla, 8-6. At the No. 2 spot, freshman standout, Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) and Kinard continued to rack up wins, defeating Anali de Bruyn and Cynthia Skogerbee, 8-3, while at the No. 3 spot junior Amy Frisch (Crescent, Ky.) and sophomore Stacey Tomkiewicz (Ojai, Calif.) defeated Jennifer Saluri and Melinda Fenimore, 8-4.
In singles action, L. Harvey split the No. 1 spot win with Debusker, as did senior Ndali Ijomah (Seattle, Wash.) and de Bruyn at the No. 2 spot. Balan grabbed a win over Kuruvilla winning 6-0, 6-5. The only loss in singles came at the No. 4 spot, where Kinard lost 7-5, 6-3 to Skogerboe. Frisch played well at the No. 5 spot, defeating Saluri, 6-0, 6-0, and Ketmayura defeated Traci Hogan, 7-6 (12-10), 6-2.
Later Saturday, the Huskers squared off with Eastern Michigan. Nebraska got off to a 4-2 start in singles action, taking losses at No. 1 and 3.
The Huskers' double teams got a tough challenge from some strong competition. Eastern Michigan played NU closer than all 2001 opponents except Drake.
L. Harvey lost her first match this year to Rebecca Hawkins, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot, while at the No. 2 spot Ijomah went on to defeat Simone Duhme in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. At the No. 3 spot Lisa D'Amelio gave Balan her second loss this season, defeating Balan, 6-1, 7-6 (4). Team captain Frisch got her first challenge of the year, beating Amalia Lincaru, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot, and Kinard rebounded after losing her single match against Drake to beat Shari Gamarnik at the No. 4 spot 7-5, 6-2. Ketmayura defeated Laura Pegula, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles Balan and Ketmayura defeated Hawkins and D'Amelio, 8-4, while L. Harvey and Kinard defeated Duhme and Gamarnik, 8-6. Frisch and Tomkiewicz teamed up to beat Lincaru and Clark, 8-3.
The Huskers improve their record to 7-0 and will travel to Texas to face No. 5 Texas Saturday and Texas A&M on Sunday.
