Huskers Sweep Jays; Stretch Win Streak To Five
Omaha -- Senior Jenifer Williams eighth-inning two-out single propelled the Nebraska softball to a 3-2 second-game win and a sweep of Creighton Wednesday at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Huskers took game one 5-0 behind a one-hit shutout by All-American pitcher Jenny Voss. Nebraska improves to 18-15 on the year and stretches its season-long win streak to five games heading into the start of Big 12 Conference play.
Junior Jamie Fuente got the Huskers started in game one with a solo homer in the first inning. Fuente slammed a line drive over the left field fence for her fourth of the year. Nebraska added a second run in the third inning when freshman Amber Burgess singled to center field to score fellow freshman Kim Ogee from second. Nebraska doubled its lead in the top of the fourth. Freshman Amanda Buchholz, playing in her first game since joining the Huskers full time following basketball season, drew a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice and a ground out, Buchholz was on third with two outs. Voss brought Buchholz home with a single deep in the hole at shortstop. After Jennifer Lizama drew one of her five walks on the night, Suhr stroked a single to left center that brought Voss home from center to put the Huskers up 4-0. On the defensive side of the ball Voss brought a no-hitter into the top of the fourth, but lost it when leadoff hitter Sami Herbster dribbled a single past first base. Herbster advanced as far as third with no out before Voss retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout. Nebraska added a final run in the top of the sixth when Burgess hit her second double of the game to score Voss from second. Voss improved to 6-6 on the year with the complete-game shutout. She has not allowed an earned run in her past four complete games. Burgess finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Nebraska stranded a season-high 15 batters in the second game of the evening, including two in the first and three in the second. Creighton took advantage of this by scoring the game
