Huskers Snag Close Win Against Southwest Missouri State
Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women's tennis team pulled out a close win Sunday, defeating Southwest Missouri State, 4-3, at Woods Tennis Center.
Nebraska took two out of three doubles matches with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, while in singles the Huskers grabbed wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots. No. 1 singles player, Leslie Harvey was unable to pull out a win against Cassandra Godfrey, while team captain Amy Frisch and Ndali Ijomah got a couple of wins to keep the match close.
In doubles action junior Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and freshman Rose Ketmayura (Austin, Texas) defeated SMS's Cassandra Godfrey and Ia Zozrashvili, 8-5, while SMS's No. 2 team of Amy Newman and Marta Rubina stole a win from NU's freshman Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Elissa Kinard (Charleston, S.C.), 8-5. At the No. 3 spot, junior Amy Frisch (Crescent, Ky.) teamed up with senior Ndali Ijomah (Seattle, Wash.) to win a close match against Oyuki Cruz and Laura Cruz, 8-6.
In singles action, SMS's Godfrey won a seesaw match against NU's L. Harvey, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while at the No. 2 spot, Balan was credited with default loss against Zozrashvili. At the No. 3 spot, Ijomah beat Cruz, 7-5, 6-3. Frisch easily won the No. 4 spot, defeating SMS's Alvaraz, 6-2, 6-0, while NU's Kinard defeated Newman in the same fashion, 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 6 spot, SMS's Rubina handed freshman Rebecca Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) a loss, 6-3, 7-5.
The Huskers improve their record to 10-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12. The Husker will travel to Newport Beach, California for their next dual against Penn State.
