Stillwater, Okla. -- Amber Burgess ripped a solo home run in the top of the ninth to lead the fourth-ranked Nebraska softball team to a 3-2 win over Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon in its Big 12 Conference opener at Cowgirl Stadium. With the win, the Huskers improved to 27-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Big 12, while lengthening their school-record winning streak to 21.
Sophomore pitcher Peaches James (14-3) picked up the win for NU, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 10 Cowgirls in 9.0 innings of work. Lauren Bay (13-6) was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs on four hits while setting a single-game record with 19 strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
The Huskers and Cowgirls (20-10) will meet again Sunday at noon. Play-by-play announcer Mike Melbye will call the game live on KOOL 105.3 FM.
