Lincoln -- Nebraska pitcher Peaches James has been selected as the first National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week in 2002, the NFCA announced Wednesday morning. The sophomore righthander earned the award on the strength of her performances at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Feb. 22-24, where she tossed 24.2 scoreless innings and picked up wins against No. 4 Louisiana State, No. 2 Stanford, Texas A&M and No. 18 Alabama to lead the Huskers to their first-ever NFCA title.
James is the second player in NU history to win the award, joining former Husker Christie McCoy (1997-98), who took the honor on April 21, 1998. The NFCA began honoring a player of the week during the 1995 season.
