Huskers Win Big 12 Tournament

Oklahoma City, Okla.- Nebraska downed ninth-ranked Baylor, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Bricktown Ballpark to win its first conference tournament title in school history and its first baseball title of any kind since 1950.

The win, NU's first in four conference finals appearances, gives the Huskers (41-16) an automatic berth in the NCAA baseball tournament beginning next Friday. It is NU's first NCAA berth since 1985 and fourth in school history.

Scott Fries (8-5) went seven innings to pick up the win, while Chad Wiles pitched the last two innings for his first save.

NU jumped ahead 4-0 with a three-run third inning capped by John Cole's RBI single. Cole later clinched the game with a leaping catch in the top of the ninth with the tying run on second and two outs.

Brandt Vlieger paced the Husker offense with two RBI. Wiles, Cole and All-American Ken Harvey were selected to the all-tournament team
