Huskers Grapplers Fair Well at Kaufman Open - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site

Five members of the Nebraska wrestling team finished in the top five at the Kaufman Open on Nov. 23.

 

The Huskers were led by redshirt freshman Jarred Berger, who finished second to top-ranked Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State at 133 pounds. Berger opened the meet with a second round victory over Mike Gibson of Augustana by fall 2:52 into the match. After defeating Gibson, Berger upset fifth-ranked Cliff Moore of Iowa, 14-13. In the semifinal match, Berger defeated Erkin Tadzhimeter of Colby Community College, 2-0 before falling to Thompson in the finals, 11-4.

 

Junior B.J. Wright took home a fourth-place finish after dropping his third-place match to Joe Johnston of Iowa. 14-5. Earlier in the day, Wright defeat Johnson 10-7.

 

Freshman Matt Keller took home the Huskers only first-place showing by winning the 20-under 125-pound weight class. Keller scored a first round win over Erik Orgega by fall 27 seconds into the match. Keller went onto win his next match against James Ball of UNO, 9-0. Keller then scored victories by fall in quarterfinals and a 10-7 decision in the semifinals to advance to the championships match. In the finals Keller took on Dan Hilario of UNO and recorded a major decision, 9-1.

 

Other Huskers that has strong showings included, freshman Dominick Moyer, who recorded a fifth-place finish at 133, while Marc Harwood fell just short of Nebraska
