Opening Statement
“Obviously a huge win for us. I told our team when we went out there for warm ups that it was as good looking of a team and as talented a team, the back was fast, the wide outs were elite. I thought the quarterback was impressive. I think Mike Locksley has done a great job of getting the right players and both their defensive ends are fantastic. We played really good players and found a way to win. Love what we’re doing in the fourth quarter, but we need to improve the third quarter. I told our guys back to back weeks, we had a 14 point lead and a 10 point lead, and in both those games we have allowed the team to come back. We have to be better about playing complimentary football and putting people away. Special teams continued to impress. I’m really happy for Kenneth Willams. In a world where football has become a little transactional, to see that moment with Troy Dannen and him was awesome. I’m excited to go on the road. Keith (Mann) tells me that we haven’t won road games in back to back games since 2006 which is mind boggling. It’s quite a challenge. They’ve beaten us five times in a row. For me it’s a great measuring stick for where we were two years ago when we first got started to now. They do a great job, top 20 in the country in turn over margin. We’ve been good in turn over margin this last game, when you’re minus three. I know coach Fleck, who I have a ton of respect for, he preaches plus three. We were minus three. When you’re minus three you have about a 7% chance of winning. Our guys overcame it, but we can’t continue to do that so we'll work on it and see what happens this week.”
On practice during a short week
“I gave them Sunday off. I gave them the option of Monday off. We’re going to do some work tonight. So, we met on Sunday. They said it was the best lift of the year, best movement of the year. The meetings were great, the guys had a ton of juice. I think they’re starting to figure out a) they’re a good team b) what we do works c) they understand we’ve got to continue to improve because there’s somethings we’re not doing. A 10 point lead and a 14 point lead and we give them up, that doesn’t make any sense. Coming out of the half and not scoring, that doesn’t make sense. In the past three games after we have trailed in the second half, Dylan (Raiola) is 33-46 which is 71.7% for 357 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, and we’ve scored on eight of our 12 drives. My job is how do we put it all together to get us to be able to do that all the time? I liked a lot of the things we were doing. I thought it was really good. We’ll see how they are tonight.”
On resilience and getting healthy in a short week
“I thought Elijah Pritchett played a fantastic game. Even the one sack he gave up, there was a miscommunication, he was supposed to have it chipped and the back went across. But, it wasn’t on Pritch. The play he made on Nyziah’s (Hunter) touchdown, he went as long as he could. He rolled his ankle and just kept playing, kept playing, kept playing. I’m really proud of what Elijah did. Some guys are a little beat up like that. Jacory (Barney Jr.), he gets hit on the last punt return, which should’ve been a touchdown probably. He comes out and he’s right back in. I think we’re probably a bit maybe bruised, but not a lot of like major, major injuries. It’s a short week, we’ll see what Malcom (Hartzog Jr.) can do tonight. Maybe we’ll get some guys back too.”
On giving Kenneth Williams a scholarship
“That was just walking off the field. I literally asked him, because the rules are different now, I said Kenneth do you have a scholarship? He said no sir. I told Troy (Dannen) he doesn’t have a scholarship. Then Troy did what he did. The rules are different. It used to be like 85 scholarships and now its like a percentage and aid and now it's like baseball and it’s an algorithm. He was so close so many times and we put (Isaiah) Mozee back there too and Kwinten Ives made an unbelievable block. I was really happy for Kenneth, not happy for him just like oh wow, but he’s a really good player. You think about our contribution from our backs in that game. Mozee, second and 20, he runs a ball and gets like nine yards, catches a check down and gets a first down. Emmett (Johnson), I think Emmett is second in the Big Ten in rushing. Second in the Big Ten and 7th national in rushing, averaging 108 per game. We ran for 200 yards, but the sack got it to like 193. Kenneth makes that production and I was really pleased and Kwinten had a great block. That was just the spur of the moment.”
