Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Tony White Pre-Indiana Press Conference
On carrying over the defensive success to the Indiana game
“Anything that you do well, you want it to carry over. I was happy for the guys that were running around. Going into the bye week they recharged, but this is a new week and a completely different challenge. Going on the road, I think I saw it was a sellout. A great offense, so a completely different challenge this week in terms of what we have to face with a really high level quarterback. Just getting ready. Tuesday, it was pretty lively and energetic, so we have to make sure we execute.”
On balancing the cornerback room
“It gives you a lot of flexibility to move stuff around. You got Ques (Marques Buford Jr.) in there and his safety time. You have Malcolm (Hartzog Jr.) at his corner time when all those guys are healthy. Blye (Hill) you know is working himself back and getting healthy and getting in shape and getting his wits about him. The more we can be flexible, the more we can take snaps off guys, the more we can move guys around. I think you just have an overall better product back there – guys are fresher, guys are faster. They are keeping each other sharp, so we will see how that plays out this Saturday.”
On how the defense has evolved
“Coach always talks about the growth mindset and we do what we have to do in order to put those guys in position to win games. Number one, it starts upfront. You got James (Williams) playing well, you got Jimari (Butler) playing well, Ty (Robinson) Nash (Hutmacher), PWill (Princewill Umanmielen), MJ Sherman’s playing well. You got a lot of guys in there playing well and when you are able to bring four guys and get pressure on the quarterback it allows you to do all that stuff on the back end. All those different coverages and all of that kind of stuff. The emphasis with Coach (Matt Rhule) seeing something to improve on from last year and having that as the emphasis in spring ball and it showing up on the grass. That all started back in the spring. And being able to cover guys, I mean, one, you got players back there who can do it, you got veteran guys that can do it. And then you got the pass rush to mix in with it. It's a good combination but it’s week-to-week so we have to put the guys in position and see what happens.”
