Postgame Quotes vs. Washington
Oct. 31, 2026 (Lincoln, Neb.)
Washington 17, Nebraska 10

Opening Statement
“Obviously a very disappointing ending to that game, credit to Washington. I thought that for all but however long of that game, that it was the most dominant defensive performance we've had since we've been here. Offensively, we just couldn't really get anything going at the level that we wanted to in terms of scoring points. We had 220 yards in the first half and only came away with seven points, and we didn't get anything in the second half. It's really hard to win a Big Ten game like that. A lot of guys stepped up on defense who were out. They made the switch to Demond (Williams), and he created challenges. He was able to extend a couple of drives and the last touchdown play. As we look back on a couple of things, they were lining up my 1 by 3 and were maxing the tight end and hit us on 4th and 18, I said that play is one hundred percent me. I said to Coach (Aurich) to bring the corner, and he brought the corner, and obviously they completely missed the tackle and scored. As we search for ways to get off the field at the end of the game, I have to live with that. It was not Coach Aurich, that was me on that last play. As we move forward and get ready for Illinois, we have to find a way to get more offensive production and score more points to win these games. Three turnovers and a missed field goal are not a recipe to win so obviously disappointed with that.”

On Offensive Mindset
“I’m not in the position to think about that and moving forward. We didn’t give up any sacks and did a nice job at those things. Thinking we would have some man-to-man shots and some deep balls, we would win on those, we had some big plays on those. Obviously, the one to Carter (Nelson), but we never really got one the entire night. We are going to have to look back and watch to see this film and see where a lot of the breakdowns occur. We got into great rhythm in the third-to-last drive of the fourth quarter. We got into good rhythm there and got the ball on the three, and then had the delay of game, then missed the field goal. Just have to go back and see why we had 200 offensive plays in the first half and no points, even with the two turnovers.”

On initial thoughts on the delay of game drive
“Coach had a man-beating play call; they were in man. The clock was running down. I was trying to save my timeouts for the second half. The way that typically works is the official looks at the clock, when it hits zero, his eyes then go down. It felt like on the field that we got the ball off. I didn’t use the timeout there. I obviously argued about that but they obviously are not going to reverse the call. Why did it exactly happen? I don't know if I can say that right now, we didn't get it off in time. Then on the third-down play, Coach called a quarterback draw with an RPO. They have a five-man box and you are going to run an RPO, I have to look at the tape to see why we bounced it outside. We'd rather not take that loss. Those are not things that should happen that did happen so I will have to go back and see why that happened. ”

On Message to the Fanbase
“I certainly understand how frustrated everyone is, that this has happened three games in a row. I obviously feel it too, I'm responsible for it. I thought it was an electric atmosphere; it was unbelievable for recruiting, and it was dynamic. I would have thought the offense would have matched the defense. Archie (Wilson) did a great job at punting tonight, other than that we have to make that field goal. I understand exactly how people think and how passionate they are and how frustrating, three games in a row are. That call is on me. All I can do is show up tomorrow and get back to work for Illinois and try to have a great November and a great week. That’s what I'll do. I’ll be here early tomorrow morning and I'll be working on Illinois. We are learning a lot, our team and our coaches are learning a lot. We have to figure out why we are not getting the production that we need offensively to win these games.”
