Timothy Thompson is a native of Dallas, Texas and joined the Huskers as a volunteer assistant coach in 2015-16. Thompson works with the women's hurdles, sprints and relays under assistant coach Matt Martin.
In 2016, Thompson helped freshmen Chanel Freeman and Lakayla Harris crack the outdoor 100m hurdles and 100m dash all-time Nebraska top-10 charts.
Thompson competed for the University of Texas at Arlington track team from 2006-09, running the 110m hurdles, 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m relay. While at UTA, Thompson contributed to the 2007 Southland Conference Outdoor championship team. He also accomplished All-Southland Conference rankings in the 60m hurdles during the indoor season and the 110m hurdles in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 outdoor seasons. He was an NCAA Division I regional qualifier in 2007 and 2008 in the 110m hurdles and 4x100m relay.
Prior to his collegiate career, Thompson was an All-American high school track and field athlete. He was a three-time Class 5A district champion in the 110m and 300m hurdles, a three-time regional qualifier, a three-time Texas Relays qualifier and a Texas Relays finalist in his senior year.
Before relocating to Lincoln, Thompson obtained his bachelors degree from North Texas University in 2014. He went on to teach K-12 physical education and health for the 2014-15 school year. He also served as the head baseball coach and assistant soccer coach. As head coach, his baseball team went to the state tournament for the first time in the school's history. He also taught junior high school math during his five years as an educator.
His passion for track and field led him to offer his time as a volunteer coach at South Grand Prairie High School and Adams Middle School during the 2012-14 seasons. Thompson also coached on the Grand Prairie Flash Track Club with multiple AAU and USA national qualifying athletes. He earned his Level 1 USA Track & Field Coaching Certification for sprints, hurdlers and relays in 2013.
