Lorie Garnett is in her first season as the communications contact for the Nebraska women’s gymnastics program. She is also the secondary contact for both the women’s golf and women’s basketball teams. She serves as the MAIAA Graduate Assistant in the Nebraska Athletic Communications office. Garnett is currently a graduate student at Nebraska, pursuing a master of arts in business with a specialization in intercollegiate athletic administration (MAIAA). She will graduate from the MAIAA program in May, 2018. Garnett, a former Division I athlete, has five years of experience in Division I athletic communications, including four years working with women's basketball programs and three years working with track and field and cross country programs.
Prior to joining Nebraska in 2016, Garnett served as an assistant director of sports information at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, from 2014 to 2016. She was the primary contact for women’s basketball, and men's and women's cross country and track and field, and supported all other sports at Utah Valley. With the Wolverines, Garnett managed athletic communications operations including starting the intern program at UVU for undergraduate students to learn the industry at Utah Valley.
Before her time UVU, Garnett was a student intern in the Brigham Young University Athletic Communications office and served as the women’s cross country and track and field contact. She supported home events and media relations for football, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball. She graduated from BYU in 2014 with a bachelor of arts in communications with an emphasis in public relations.
A native of Manteca, Calif., Garnett started her college career at Utah Valley, where she competed as a pole vaulter from 2010-2012 on the Division I track and field team, then in the Great West Conference. Garnett completed an associates of arts at UVU and transferred to BYU in 2012, where she began working first for BYU's nationally-acclaimed student newspaper the Universe and then BYU Athletic Communications.
Garnett has supported NCAA staff at multiple NCAA Championships, including the 2017 College World Series in Omaha, the 2017 Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional in Kansas City, the 2016 Women’s Volleyball Championship in Kansas City and most recently, the 2018 Men's Basketball Midwest Regional in Omaha. She has also served on the media coordination teams at the 2017 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championships and 10 Western Athletic Conference Championships, spanning four sports.
In 2014, Garnett was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Sierra High School for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. Lorie and her husband, Brynr, live in Lincoln and have a dog named Chief.
