John Harris Jr. is in his second season as a graduate assistant for the Nebraska basketball program. In his role, he assists in day-to-day operations for the Husker program.
A Lincoln native, Harris returned home after working in the private sector since earning his undergraduate degree from Benedictine (Kan.) College in business administration in 2017. In addition to working a full-time job, Harris also assisted with the MOKAN AAU Basketball program for the past two years and also handled personal training. At Nebraska, Harris is working on a master’s degree in youth development.
As a collegian, Harris was a standout performer at Benedictine, earning All-Heart of America Conference honors in each of his final three seasons at the school. He was a four-year performer who totaled 1,282 career points, 412 assists and 114 steals at the school.
A two-time NAIA honorable-mention All-American, Harris averaged 14.5 points, 5.6 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game as a senior, while shooting 43 percent from 3-point range. Harris helped the school to a conference title and NAIA Division I National Tournament appearance – the first in 44 years for the program – in 2014 before returning to the national tournament the following year.
Harris starred at Lincoln High, earning All-City honors from the Lincoln Journal Star as a junior and senior and garnering second-team Class A all-state honors for the Links as a senior. Harris’ grandfather, Albert Maxey, is a member of the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame and played for Fred Hoiberg’s grandfather, Jerry Bush, during the 1958-59 and 1959-60 seasons.
