Eric Thies continued to work in the long distance events as a sophomore... ran in five meets during the indoor season... posted a top finish of eighth at the adidas Classic in the 5,000 meters, running 16:03.45... ran the 10,000 meters twice during the outdoor season... finished third at the Hastings Bronco Relays (33:55.79) and second at the Concordia Twilight (33:36.06).
2008 (Freshman)
After a freshman cross country season that saw him compete at the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Midwest Regional, Thies was a welcome addition to the distance squad during the track and field season... ran under nine minutes twice during the indoor season in the 3,000 meters, posting an oversized personal best of 8:56.70 at the Iowa State Classic... ran a time of 34:17.92 in the 10,000 meters early in the outdoor season at the Hastings Bronco Relays... cut his personal best to 32:58.61 at the Kansas Relays... won the 5,000 meters at the Ward Haylett Invitational with a then-personal best of 15:43.31.
Before Nebraska (Sibley East HS)
Thies qualified for the Minnesota Class A state meet for five straight years under Coach Mike Vrklan... earned his first trip to the 2003 state meet as an eighth grader when all except for one other runner were juniors or seniors... scored as a sophomore in 2004 (sixth) and as a junior in 2006 (third) in a personal-best 3,200-meter time of 9:39.28... also qualified in the 1,600 as a junior and senior, placing sixth and eighth... personal-best 1,600 time of 4:23.78 was a record-setting performance to win the Minnesota Section 1A championship... was a member of the National Honor Society.
