Before Nebraska (Waukesha West)
Steve Spratte was one of the top offensive players in Wisconsin, and was ranked by ESPN.com as the 15th-best recruit in the state in 2007. Spratte was a two-time Wisconsin Football Coaches Association all-state honoree and earned first-team all-conference honors three straight years. As a senior, Spratte rushed for school records in yards (1,813), touchdowns (23) and carries (269) while also catching nine passes for 129 yards. For his efforts, he was named the league and county player of the year.
As a 14-year-old freshman, Spratte was pulled up from junior varsity by Coach Steve Rux and led Waukesha West to the WIAA Division 2 state championship, rushing for 145 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries in the championship game. He finished his career with 773 carries for 5,117 yards and 57 touchdowns, all school marks. His rushing total ranked among the top 20 in state history.
Spratte also ran track for Waukesha West, earning a place at the state meet four straight years. He was an all-state sprinter who helped establish eight school relay records, including a mark of 42.72 in the 4x100 at the state meet during his junior season.
Spratte’s father, Todd, was a linebacker for the Cornhuskers from 1979 to 1981.
