Anthony West was a key part of a talented group of defensive backs throughout his career and earned playing time in all 14 games during his senior season. Also a special teams contributor, West had 13 total tackles in 2010, including 10 solo stops. He had his third career interception against Idaho, one of 19 NU picks this season. West earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology in May of 2010, and played his senior season as a graduate student.
2010 (Senior)
West turned in season-high tackle marks with three stops each against Idaho, Kansas State and Oklahoma State. In Nebraska’s 38-17 win over the Vandals, West also intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards, in addition to being a game captain. West’s three tackles at Kansas State were all solo stops. He made two solo stops in the Holiday Bowl against Washington.
2009 (Junior)
West played in 13 games with five starts, starting the first four games and the Kansas State game. Despite not being in the starting lineup, West was considered a first-teamer and was one of seven defensive backs with a Blackshirt. He finished the year with 11 tackles, including nine solo stops, and he added four breakups. West had three tackles against both Virginia Tech and Kansas State, and had a season-high two pass breakups at Baylor. In addition to his work in the secondary, West also started on Nebraska's punt return unit.
2008 (Sophomore)
West was Nebraska's starting right corner and played in 12 games with 11 starts. He finished with 29 tackles, including 23 solo stops and tied for the team lead with nine pass breakups. He had six games with at least three tackles. West had his first career interception against Western Michigan in the opener, returning the pick 26 yards. His second career sack came against San Jose State. West had four tackles at Oklahoma, then had a career day against Kansas with three breakups, six tackles and five solo stops, all career bests. He had two breakups at Kansas State and picked off his second pass against Clemson in the Gator Bowl.
2007 (Redshirt Freshman)
West was a reserve cornerback and saw significant special teams action. His most extensive action came when NU went to five and six defensive backs. West finished with six tackles, including four solo stops. He made three tackles at Missouri, before adding two tackles for 11 yards in losses against Texas A&M, including a nine-yard sack. He had two hurries against Kansas State.
2006 (Redshirt)
West redshirted in his first season in 2006.
Before Nebraska (Point Loma HS)
West was one of seven Californians in the 2006 class and came to NU from Point Loma High School in San Diego. As a senior, West rushed for 1,320 yards and 14 touchdowns on 174 carries, and had 17 receptions for 341 yards and four touchdowns. He also tallied 36 tackles on defense in helping Coach Mike Hastings' Point Loma squad finish as runner-up in the 2005 CIF Division III championship to St. Augustine High School and fellow Nebraska recruit Menelik Holt. As a junior, West rushed for 449 yards on 67 carries, scoring seven touchdowns. He added 13 tackles on defense.
PrepStar placed West on its All-West region team. West also received recruiting interest from UCLA, Texas Tech, San Diego State and Utah.
Personal
The son of Robert and Marguerite West, Anthony was born on March 29, 1988. West's father played three seasons in the NFL, two with the Chiefs and one with the 49ers. Anthony is a two-time Big 12 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll selection. West has volunteered with NU's hospital visits.
