Lewis played in all 11 regular-season games with nine starts and finished with 26 total tackles, including 16 solos. He also tied the then-school record with eight pass breakups. He added a fumble recovery on Oklahoma’s first possession to set up a 34-yard drive for the game’s first touchdown in Nebraska’s 42-25 win. He added a third-quarter interception against the Sooners and returned it 28 yards to the OU 49 to set up another Husker touchdown drive. He had a season-high four tackles against Arizona State, but his best game came against Miami in the 1989 Orange Bowl when he registered three unassisted tackles and an interception that included a 31-yard return against the Hurricanes. His interception and return to the Miami 37, set up a Gregg Barrios 50-yard field goal for Nebraska’s only points in the 23-3 loss.
