Honorable-Mention Academic All-Big Eight (1988)
1988 (Senior)
A three-time letterman, Jon Marco backed up Broderick Thomas and Jeff Mills at the outside linebacker positions for the Huskers as a senior in 1988. He played in all 12 games for the Big Red and finished the season with 26 tackles, including 14 solos. He added two tackles for loss (9 yards), including an eight-yard sack. Marco also contributed three QB hurries, which caused a pair of interceptions. He helped Nebraska capture the Big Eight title with an unbeaten (7-0) conference regular season on its way to an 11-2 overall record that included a trip to the 1989 Orange Bowl against Miami. The Blackshirts finished sixth nationally in pass defense (134.8 ypg) and seventh in total defense (262.8 ypg).
During his three seasons as a Husker, Marco totaled 41 tackles, including 22 solos, while notching 12 TFLs (66 yards) and four sacks (44 yards). He had four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
1987 (Junior)
Marco contributed a solid season backing up All-American Broderick Thomas at right outside linebacker in 1987. Marco totaled a career-high 28 tackles, including 19 solos, while adding six TFLs (23 yards). He was credited with two sacks (15 yards). He showed strong play-making ability by recording his only career interception (Utah State), while adding a pair of fumble recoveries. He also broke up four passes. He helped the Blackshirts rank sixth nationally in scoring defense (12.1 ppg), eighth in total defense (264.7 ypg) and ninth in rushing defense (107.0 ypg). He helped the Big Red to a 10-2 overall record and a trip to the 1988 Fiesta Bowl against Florida State.
1986 (Sophomore)
Marco earned his first varsity letter after recording nine tackles, including eight solo stops, while playing in all 11 regular-season games and the 1987 USF&G Sugar Bowl win over LSU. An explosive player off the edge, Marco registered four tackles for loss (34 yards), including a massive 21-yard sack. He added an unassisted tackle and two pass breakups in the Sugar Bowl.
1985 (Redshirt)
Marco redshirted in his second season as a Husker in 1985.
1984 (Freshman)
A walk-on out of Bellevue West High School, Marco competed as a reserve outside linebacker for the Husker freshman team in 1984.
Bellevue West High School
A second-team all-state quarterback and an all-state punter for Coach Jerry van Waart at Bellevue West, Marco was also a three-time letterman as a wrestler.
Personal
The son of John and Hertha Marco, Jon was born in Omaha. He earned his bachelor’s degree as a business administration major at Nebraska in 1989.
