1988 (Senior)
A two-year starter at left tackle on a dominant Nebraska offensive line, Bob Sledge started 11 of Nebraska’s 12 regular-season games and the 1989 Orange Bowl against Miami. The 6-2, 270-pounder from Omaha earned first-team All-Big Eight honors from the Associated Press and the Big Eight coaches while helping Nebraska claim the NCAA rushing title (382.3 ypg). The Huskers also ranked sixth nationally in scoring (39.5 ppg) and seventh in total offense (477.9 ypg). He was a key part of NU’s run to a Big Eight Conference title and a berth in the 1989 Orange Bowl against Miami.
1987 (Junior)
In his first season as a starter, Sledge earned second-team All-Big Eight honors from United Press International at left tackle. He helped the Big Red to a 10-2 overall record and a trip to the 1988 Fiesta Bowl against Florida State. Nebraska ranked second nationally in total offense (489.0 ypg), while ranking third in the NCAA in rushing (373.5 ypg) and scoring (38.5 ppg).
1986 (Sophomore)
In his first season on the field for the Huskers, Sledge lettered as a reserve offensive tackle behind Rob Maggard and Keven Lightner in 1986. Sledge helped the Huskers to an appearance in the 1987 USF&G Sugar Bowl, where they defeated LSU 30-15. Nebraska finished second nationally in rushing offense (305.5 ypg) and third in scoring (37.8 ppg).
1985 (Redshirt)
A transfer from South Dakota in the spring of 1985, Sledge redshirted at Nebraska during the fall.
1984 (Freshman)
Sledge was a non-lettered reserve on the offensive line at South Dakota as a true freshman in 1984.
Omaha Gross High School
An all-state defensive tackle for Coach Stan Macaitis at Omaha Gross as a senior in 1983, Sledge was the leading tackler on a team that reached the state finals. Sledge graduated from Omaha Gross one year after Nebraska All-America right guard John McCormick. Sledge was also a state wrestling runner-up and lettered in track at Omaha Gross.
Personal
The son of Doris Sledge, Bob was a business administration major at Nebraska. He was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His son, Sam, is an offensive lineman at Nebraska (2023, 2024, 2025) after twice being named first-team Super-State at Omaha Creighton Prep.
