Sautron Shines in Opening Round at NCAA Regional

Written byJeff Griesch

Rudy Sautron opened his appearance at the NCAA Marana Regional with a 69 (-3) to sit in a tie for sixth place in an 89-player field after Monday's first round.

Sautron, a junior from Reunion Island, France, posted the day's best score from a player outside of a team lineup at the regional, just ahead of UTEP's Dylan Teeter who managed a 70 (-2) on the 7,317-yard layout at The Gallery Golf Club North Course.

Sautron got off to a solid start with five straight pars before recording his first of five birdies on the day on the 553-yard, par-5 fifth hole. After a par on No. 7, he added back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes to make the turn at 33 (-3). He opened the back with three consecutive pars, before his only blemish of the day with a double-bogey on the par-4 13th hole. He responded with birdies on No. 15 and No. 17 to end the day at 69.

The hosts from No. 18 Arizona and defending national champion and No. 5 Oklahoma State were tied for the team lead at 277 (-11) after the first 18 holes of competition. No. 8 LSU sits in third at 279 (-9), followed by Arkansas State (281) and Duke (282). Alabama enters Tuesday's second round in sixth place at 286 (-2).

The top five teams and the top individual from a non-advancing team from each of the six NCAA Regionals (Athens, Bermuda Run, Bryan, Columbus, Corvallis, Marana) will advance to the NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. (May 29-June 3).

The NCAA Marana Regional continues Tuesday with the second round beginning with tee times at 9 a.m. (CT). Live scoring is available at Huskers.com and live video stream is available to subscribers of Babygrande Golf.
