Big Red Finish Opening Day of Prairie View A&M Invite

Arlington, Texas - The Nebraska bowling team went 2-3 on the first day in Arlington, Texas, at the 2024 Prairie View A&M Invite and currently sit in eighth place with a total pinfall of 4,881 and an average of 195.2. 

In the first match of the day, NU faced Southern State in a five-game total pinfall baker match. The Huskers grabbed an early 55-pin lead after the first game, as NU shot 212 and the Jaguars rolled a 157. In game two, the Huskers fell, 166-194, before adding to their lead in the third game with a score of 203 to the Jaguars' 168. Nebraska and Southern split the final two games as the Huskers claimed a 942-855 victory.

Up next, the Huskers faced No. 5 North Carolina A&T for the second week in a row. Both teams struggled in the first game as the Aggies bested the Big Red, 139-158 to take the advantage. NU responded with a narrow victory in game two (216-212) before North Carolina A&T fought back with a sizable win in the third game (168-212). The Huskers used a big fourth game (258-178) to take a 21-pin lead heading into the final game. However, the Aggies got the best of the Big Red for the second-straight week as they knocked off Nebraska, 211-250, in the fifth game to take the overall victory, 992-1010.

With a 1-1 overall record, NU faced No. 9 Stephen F. Austin in the third match of the day. The Lumberjacks came out strong in game one, 171-204, and grabbed the early 33-pin lead. NU battled back with an advantage in game two (212-161), before falling behind after the third match (174-205). Despite this, NU bounced back with two straight wins in games four (231-205) and game five (236-193), to take the overall win, 1024-969, for their second victory of the day.

In the fourth match of the day, the Huskers took on No. 4 Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs edged the Huskers in game one (173-175), before NU evened the match with a 29-pin win in game two (224-195). Louisiana Tech then rallied to take the final three games of the match against Nebraska to take the match, 947-1008, and hand the Huskers their second loss of the day.

Up next was the fifth and final match of the day where the Big Red faced No. 11 Sam Houston State. NU fell in the first game, 181-222, but trimmed the deficit to just five pins with a strong showing in game two (235-199). Both teams cut into the other's lead in game three (168-201) and game four (189-165), before the Bearkats finished Nebraska off in the fifth game (225-203) to take the match, 1012-976.

The Huskers will continue tournament play on Saturday at 9:25 a.m. (CT) with five matches of traditional games.The combined results will seed each team for Sunday's Championship bracket to conclude the tournament. Each team will compete in two matches of best 4-of-7 baker games for final placements and awards.
