New Castle, Del. - The Nebraska bowling team sits in sixth place with 5,200 pins (208.0 average) and a 5-0 record at the Northeast Classic after the first day of competition. The Huskers remain unbeaten on the first day of pool play this spring after going a perfect 5-0 last weekend at the Stormin’ Blue and White Vegas Classic.
In the first match of the day, NU faced Norfolk State in a five-game total pinfall baker match. The Huskers held a narrow one-pin lead after the first game, as NU shot 190 and the Spartans rolled a 189. In game two, the Huskers padded their lead with a score of 201 to the Spartans 133, before running away with the match in games three and four with totals of 210 and 236. The Huskers dropped four pins in the final match despite claiming a 1,005-795 victory over Norfolk State.
Up next, the Huskers faced Niagara. NU had the advantage from start to finish, grabbing a 66 pin lead through games one (225-200) and two (213-172). Nebraska continued its impressive run by rolling a 218 to the Purple Eagles’ 171 in the third game. The Huskers ran away with the match in the final two games, outscoring Niagara by 131 pins to grab the overall victory in their second contest, 1,080-836.
With a 2-0 overall record, NU faced Molloy in the third match of the day. The Lions came out strong in game one, 174-189, and grabbed the early 15 pin lead. NU battled back with advantages in games two (186-138) and three (190-152), but Molloy fought back with a 186-209 victory to cut the Huskers lead to just 48 pins with one game remaining. However NU topped the Lions in game five (182-160), to take the overall win, 918-848, for their third-straight victory.
In the fourth match of the day, the Huskers took on Chestnut Hill. CHC came out on top in game one (146-170), before NU evened the match with a 24 pin win in game two (173-149). The Huskers then responded with their second baker 300 of the spring season in game three to extend their advantage to 140 pins. In game four, Nebraska handled CHC, 204-174, and NU grabbed its fourth overall victory of the day in game five (237-202) to seal the 1,060-855 win.
Up next was the fifth and final match of the day where the Big Red faced No. 15 Mount St. Marys. NU secured the first two games, 247-194 and 227-167, and held a 113 pin advantage. In game three, Nebraska added to its lead as they spun a 257 to the Mountaineers' 196. The Huskers capped off their perfect outing with victories in game four (201-160) and game five (205-209) to finish the day undefeated, 1137-926.
The Huskers continue competition at the Northeast Classic tomorrow starting at 8:25 a.m. (CT). Each team will play five traditional matches, with NU facing New Jersey City, No. 24 Delaware State, Wilmington and No. 5 NCAT.
