Life Skills Hosts 15th Annual Husker Networking Night

The 15th Annual Husker Networking Night, a required event for all second-year student-athletes, returned to Memorial Stadium on Monday, September 25th hosting over 90 student-athletes and 37 local professional guests . As one of the longest running programs led by the Life Skills team, Husker Networking Night aims to educate student-athlete attendees on the art of networking, teach specific networking strategies and techniques, and allows attendees the immediate opportunity to put what they learn into practice.

Second-year student-athletes from all Husker teams gathered in the West Stadium Club for the event which begin with a keynote address from Executive Associate AD of Life Skills, Keith Zimmer, who provided tips and advice to attendees on the importance of building a strong professional network and how to use the platform of being a Nebraska student-athlete to make lasting connections.

Following Zimmer's message, attendees began the speed networking segment of the event which included two rotations lasting 15 minutes each where small groups of student-athletes were matched at tables with professionals in career industries of interest. During this time, student-athletes had the opportunity to practice their elevator pitch, ask questions, and learn about networking strategies from the 37 professional guests in attendance, which included 11 Husker letterwinners.

The evening continued with a newly added component to the event this year, a dining etiquette education session. Led by Assistant Dean of Academic and Career Development for UNL's college of Businss, Rachel Larson, and University of of Nebraska Foundation Talent Acquisition Director, Lauren Stehlik, attendees learned what proper dining etiquette looks like in a professional setting and various topics such as the proper way to use their napkin, utensils, and conversational etiquette. To conclude the event, attendees had the chance to practice the dining etiquette topics they just learned and had an additional opportunity to network with professional guests at their table over a meal.

For questions about the Husker Networking Night or any other career development programming for Husker student-athletes, contact Assistant Director of Life Skills/PEO Director, Tom Lemke.
