Life Skills Introduces Big Red Wealth Series

The Nebraska Life Skills team continually looks for ways to add value to the student-athlete experience through programming offered to Husker student-athletes. The latest addition to the Life Skills 4-year tiered programming, which includes annual required events centered on personal and professional development, is the Big Red Wealth Series. As part of the Big Red Wealth Series, every Husker student-athlete regardless of their academic year will attend a required seminar focused on important money management topics.

The first addition of the Big Red Wealth Series occured on Monday, October 9th in Memorial Stadium and was required for all student-athletes in their 4th-6th year at Nebraska. Led by the Lincoln Center Director for the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, Lindsay Tillinghast, attendees learned about types of insurance to consider as they look to begin their professional careers after their time at Nebraska. Tillinghast also discussed financial considerations to keep in mind when preparing to purchase a home including purchase price, interest rates, property taxes, and the impact of credit scores on loans. Attendees then looked at four scenarios to make calculations and determine the affordability of a home purchase based on numbers given.

The Big Red Wealth Series will continue on November 13th with 3rd year student-athletes attending a seminar on saving, investing, and retirement planning, 1st year student-athletes attending a seminar on budgeting and building credit on February 5th, and will wrap up with 2nd year student-athletes attending a seminar on taxes on March 18th.
