Scarlet Rallies Past Cream in Final Scrimmage

The Scarlet scored four runs over the fifth and sixth innings to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Cream in the final intrasquad scrimmage of the fall for the Nebraska softball team Thursday night at Bowlin Stadium.

The Scarlet trailed 3-2 in the sixth inning before Bella Bacon launched the game-winning two-run home run. Bacon finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Jordy Bahl also had two hits for the Scarlet with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. For the Cream, Ava Bredwell was 2-for-3 and scored twice, while Emmerson Cope was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Freshmen got the start in the circle for each team. Cope tossed 4.0 shutout innings for the Cream, allowing three hits and striking out a pair. For the Scarlet, Caitlin Olensky was perfect through her first 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits in 4.0 total innings.

In relief, Jordy Bahl earned the win for the Scarlet, as she did not allow an earned run and struck out three in her 3.0 innings. Sarah Harness was charged with four runs (two earned) for the Cream.

The only hit for either team through the first two innings was a second-inning single from Peyton Cody for the Scarlet. One inning later, singles from Mckinley Malecha and Bahl put runners on first and second with one out for the Scarlet, but Cope escaped the jam with a pop out and a strikeout.

The Cream got its first hit on a one-out single from Bredwell in the top of the fourth and Cope followed with a two-run home run to make it 2-0.

In the top of the fifth, a one-out double from Haidyn Warner put the Cream in a position to add to their lead, but Bahl used a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.

Bahl then helped the Scarlet tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. She laced a two-out, RBI triple that scored Malia Thoms and one pitch later, Bahl raced home on a passed ball to knot the score at 2-2.

The Cream regained the lead with a single run in the top of the sixth. Bredwell led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. She then scored the go-ahead run on an RBI ground out from Samantha Bland.

Bahl then retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the seventh.

Following three scrimmages, Nebraska plays its first exhibition game of the fall on Sunday when the Huskers host Omaha at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free into all fall exhibition games at Bowlin Stadium.
